How do I play 4EX: Retro Connect?
4EX: Retro Connect is a competitive logic game where the goal is to connect 4 or more of your color pods in a row, either horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Players take turns dropping a pod into the grid against the computer opponent. The round ends when either player runs out of pods.
Rules and Gameplay Details
Basic Rules
Each player starts a round with 21 pods, with players alternating turns to drop a pod into the grid. The goal is to connect 4 or more pods in a line. When a line is completed, it disappears, and all the pods above that line fall down to fill the empty spaces. Points are then awarded to the scoring player.
Players can only complete a line score by including their current drop pod in the line. When pods drop down, they may align with other pods of the player's color, creating a potential line score. To score this line, the player must complete it with their current drop pod, adding an interesting strategy element to the game. If a player fails to drop their piece within 10 seconds, they forfeit their turn. The round ends when either player runs out of pods.
Bonus Drops
During each bonus drop, if the player completes a line, an extra 1000 points are awarded for each consecutive bonus drop the player completes. For example, if you complete a line and then complete another line on your bonus drop, you get the line score plus 1000 points. If you then complete another line (on your second bonus drop), you'd get the line score plus 2000 points.
Bonus Pods
Bonus pods are activated when included in a line score:
- Multi-Pod: Multiplies the total line score by 3 or 4.
- Mobius Pod: All opponent pods aligned with the axes shown on the pod will change to the player's pod color.
- Extra Life: An additional life is awarded to the player (Single Player Mode only).
- X-Mine: The connected pods explode, and no score is given to the player.
How does scoring work in 4EX: Retro Connect?
Points are awarded for the total number of pods involved in each line's completion. More points are given for connecting 5, 6 or 7 in a row, as well as for making line combos. Completing a line during a drop gives the player a bonus drop.
How do player lives work in 4EX: Retro Connect?
You start the game with 3 lives. The game ends when all of your lives are depleted. If you fail to score higher in a round than the computer, a life is lost. Extra lives can be earned based on your score.
